Yesterday the world celebrated three hundred years of folk and fairy wisdom from the Brothers Grimm. My favourite as a child was the story of The Elves and the Shoemaker because of the way in which they worked in secret to help the shoemaker and his wife out of poverty. Nowadays I sense a symbolic meaning in the story (and apologies if this has been documented by another author somewhere – I have had no time to do any real research on the story). The elves represent the unconscious, diligently working away on our behalf to bring us to the richness of our integrated and authentic selves. While we struggle through our daily conscious preoccupations, every once in a while something is revealed to us – a new pair of shoes that seem to have come from nowhere but are just the pair we need at that very time. How often does the unconscious prompt and enlighten us? And how do we start paying more attention to our ‘inner elves’ (‘s-elves’?), giving them the food and light they deserve?
